Paul & I are watching "At The Table with Anthony Bourdain" right now. It's great. It basically films a dinner convo with Tony & some dinner guests. You get to be a voyeur, an eavesdropper. You get to see an amazing, artistic, fabulous meal created and served.
Tony is a bit of an arrogant prick - but I can't help but love him. I love him even when he's describing detesting eggs benedict because he's made "thousands of them for rubes." I love him even when he describes getting the best table ahead of everyone else as "I'm embarassed by it, but I f*cking love it." I love him when he says life "post-Rachel Ray is probably better than life pre-Rachel." ...Because she's helped & inspired Americans to get in the kitchen & make good, fresh food.
I think I have a new favorite show.
Of course they had this same format for the IFC show "Dinner For Five" with director Jon Favreau, but I agree that Tony is much more entertaining to watch. His personality is interesting to me, and always has been on his other shows, because he's such a marriage of extremes: the cynical exterior that loves to make hyperbolic comments and wisecracks, and then the surprisingly soft-hearted creamy center. Maybe they ought to expand the show to have them cook their own dinner and then sit down to eat it. The duck confit I once had at Tony's Les Halles in NYC was uber yummy. Maybe they could start there.
