I have tears in my eyes and hope in my heart as I watch President-Elect Obama's acceptance speech. His intro says it all:
If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.
It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled – Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.
It’s the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.
It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.
Paul & I are watching "At The Table with Anthony Bourdain" right now. It's great. It basically films a dinner convo with Tony & some dinner guests. You get to be a voyeur, an eavesdropper. You get to see an amazing, artistic, fabulous meal created and served.
Tony is a bit of an arrogant prick - but I can't help but love him. I love him even when he's describing detesting eggs benedict because he's made "thousands of them for rubes." I love him even when he describes getting the best table ahead of everyone else as "I'm embarassed by it, but I f*cking love it." I love him when he says life "post-Rachel Ray is probably better than life pre-Rachel." ...Because she's helped & inspired Americans to get in the kitchen & make good, fresh food.
I think I have a new favorite show.
All this hype about Palin makes me want to hurl. Her speech, while it was spunky and entertaining, said nothing of substance. Oh, but she did mention she was proud to be a "pit bull with lipstick."
Like her or not, you have to admit that even though it would be sick & wrong, it's true that if Hilary were campaigning for VP and leaving her months old baby with Down's syndrome at home, the right wing nuts would be screaming bloody murder and calling her an abomination and an unfit mother.
